A 6-inch backing plate is the standard size for working large, flat areas quickly. It supports a full-size pad across hoods, roofs, doors and quarter panels, spreading pressure evenly so the polish breaks down consistently. Replace a worn plate and you’ll notice smoother rotation and better pad retention.
- Use pads that slightly overhang the plate so the plate never contacts the paint
- Confirm thread compatibility with your polisher
- Swap to a smaller plate for curves, pillars and tight bumpers
- Inspect the hook surface for wear that could let pads fly off
Keep a spare on hand so a worn plate never holds up a correction job.
